Apple Watch Readiness Score: What It Can—and Cannot—Tell You

A readiness score can support a training conversation, but it is not a diagnosis, clearance, or substitute for clinical care.

What a readiness score is for

Apple's new readiness experience combines signals such as resting heart rate, sleep, HRV, and VO2 max. Its best use is trend awareness: a prompt to notice recovery, routine changes, or data gaps. It is not a medical conclusion about illness, injury, or whether someone should train.

Read the trend before the number

Check whether the device was worn consistently, whether sleep and activity data are complete, and whether unusual travel, alcohol, illness, medication, or sensor fit may have distorted the baseline. Compare a multi-week pattern with how the person feels and performs. A single low reading should invite context, not panic.

Build a clinician handoff

For symptoms, sustained changes, or a high-stakes decision, write down the dates, symptoms, and relevant measurements and take that record to a qualified clinician. Do not use the score to self-diagnose or delay care. Feature availability and regulated use can also vary by region.

FAQ

Can readiness score tell me to skip exercise? It can inform a personal decision, but it does not provide medical clearance. Why did it change overnight? First inspect data quality and recent behavior before inferring a health cause.
